338 Women’s D1 Soccer Colleges

Female soccer player representing women's D1 soccer colleges listing(List at end updated for 2023.) There are 338 women’s D1 soccer schools in 32 conferences according to the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE). The average number of participants per team in 2020 was 29.4 and the NCAA allows a maximum of 14 scholarships for D1 women’s soccer. This is more than allowed by men’s teams, 9.9, and more than all others sanctioning bodies except the NJCAA which allows 18. Soccer is an equivalency sport which means singles scholarships can be divided among multiple players. Therefore, players receiving full-ride soccer scholarships will be in the minority.

Every state has D1 women’s soccer programs with California having the most with 26. Texas has 22 and New York has 21. There are five states with only one D1 program. The following are the top 10 states for D1 women’s soccer:

  • California
  • Texas
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • Ohio
  • Virginia
  • Illinois
  • South Carolina
  • Florida

Who spends the most on women’s D1 soccer?

According the latest available data, the average expenses per team in D1 women’s soccer was $963,383.
This includes:

appearance guarantees and options, athletically related student aid, contract services, equipment, fundraising activities, operating expenses, promotional activities, recruiting expenses, salaries and benefits, supplies, travel, and any other expenses attributable to intercollegiate athletic activities.

These numbers are likely to have been affected by COVID. In 2020, Texas A&M had the highest expenditure of all schools at $3,874,358 and was the only school over $3,000,000. Vanderbilt was second, followed by Arkansas, TCU, and Auburn. The following were the top ten teams ranked by expenses:

  • Texas A & M University-College Station
  • Vanderbilt University
  • University of Arkansas
  • Texas Christian University
  • Auburn University
  • University of Southern California
  • University of Mississippi
  • University of Virginia-Main Campus
  • Syracuse University
  • Baylor University

Five of the schools are in the SEC, two each from the ACC and Big 12, and one from the PAC-12. The University of St. Thomas ranked last in expenses with less than $100,000. Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley state had the next lowest expense totals under $200,000. The Southwestern Athletic Conference had four teams in the bottom ten of D1 women’s soccer expenses. The bottom ten includes two programs from the Big South and one each from the Metro Atlantic Athletic, Mid-Eastern Athletic, and Southland conferences.

Based on the top teams by expenses, it isn’t a surprise that the SEC had the highest average expenses for all D1 women’s soccer programs. It was the only conference with an average over two million dollars. The ACC had the second highest average followed by the Big 12 conference. The following are the top 10 conferences with the highest average expenses:

  • Southeastern Conference
  • Atlantic Coast Conference
  • Big 12 Conference
  • Big Ten Conference
  • Pac-12 Conference
  • West Coast Conference
  • American Athletic Conference
  • Big East Conference
  • Patriot League
  • Colonial Athletic Association

Only three conferences had averages of less than $500,000. The Southwestern Athletic Conference had the lowest at less than $400,000. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Ivy Group were both at under $500,000. Keep in mind that COVID significantly affected college athletics during this period.

What kind of schools have D1 women’s soccer programs?

There are more public institutions, 220, than private schools, 116. There is one for profit college. Over a quarter of the colleges are in the “Goldilocks” range of 5,000 to 10,000 full-time undergraduates. This range is probably one of the most frequently listed preferences of high school students. Universities of 10,000 or more students make up 45% of women’s D1 soccer programs. Just over 30% of the schools have fewer than 5,000 full-time undergraduates. There are only 20 schools in this category that are under the 2,500 mark.

Given how few small schools have D1 women’s soccer, it’s not unexpected that only 16 are classified as Baccalaureate Colleges. A total of 71 schools are classified as Master’s Colleges & Universities. Almost three-quarters of all schools were Doctoral Universities with 122 of them being classified as having Very High Research Activity.

How much do women’s D1 soccer schools cost?

Since soccer is an equivalency sport (for now) and not necessarily fully funded, soccer players and their families need to pay attention to college costs. After all, a 50% scholarship at a school that has a total cost of attendance of $30,000 may be affordable where one that costs $60,000 isn’t. For all D1 women’s soccer schools, the average total cost of attendance at private institutions was $66,155 with a high of $83,838 and a low of $20,146. A total of 64 universities had costs higher than the average. Only 12 were less than $50,000. The following are the top ten private schools ranked by total cost of attendance. All cost more than $80,000.

  • Northwestern University
  • University of Pennsylvania
  • Columbia University in the City of New York
  • Brown University
  • Yale University
  • University of Southern California
  • Georgetown University
  • Dartmouth College
  • Fordham University
  • Southern Methodist University

The price tags are lower at public institutions. The average total cost of attendance for public universities with D1 women’s soccer was $27,300 with a high of $41,473 and a low of $19,018. Two schools were over $40,000. The following are the ten most expensive public universities:

  • University of California-Berkeley
  • William & Mary
  • New Jersey Institute of Technology
  • The Pennsylvania State University
  • University of California-Santa Barbara
  • University of California-Davis
  • Temple University
  • University of California-Riverside
  • University of Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh Campus
  • University of Virginia-Main Campus

Families need to remember that public universities often charge out-of-state residents substantially more than in-state residents. Out-of-state costs at public institutions can rival that of private schools. Two schools charged out-of-state students over $70,000 with another nine charging more than $60,000. Many public institutions only charge athletes in-state tuition. However, athletes need to confirm this and then think seriously about what happens should they ever quit the team.

Of course, very few students, athletes or not, pay full-price at private institutions. Many offer generous need-based and merit-based financial aid. Furthermore, athletic and academic scholarships may be stacked. Under the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules, athletes can potentially earn money to cover any additional costs. But that would be another activity to include on top of an already demanding schedule of athletics and academics. Given the costs, families should make sure they estimate their Expected Family Contribution (soon to be the Student Aid Index) early and use net price calculators at every school they consider.

What are the graduation rates at D1 women’s soccer schools?

While colleges are required to report graduation rates by sport, they don’t make them easy to find. They aren’t collected and reported in one place as other college graduation rates are. You can find out how to lookup the information in How to Find Student-Athlete Graduation Rates. Generally, the athletic graduation rates are actually higher than that of the general student population. The average national 4-year college graduation rate is 46.6%. Among just public schools with D1 women’s soccer programs, the 4-year graduation rate is 42%, for private schools it’s 66%. Four schools had graduation rates over 90%. The following are the schools with the highest graduation rates. There are more than 10 because of ties.

Name 4 yr Grad Rate
University of Notre Dame 90
Georgetown University 90
Princeton University 90
College of the Holy Cross 90
Duke University 89
University of Virginia-Main Campus 89
University of Pennsylvania 89
Vanderbilt University 89
Boston College 88
Villanova University 88
Columbia University in the City of New York 88
Yale University 88
Cornell University 88

While the Ivy League had the most schools on the list at five, only one school made the top four. The ACC had four schools at the top, while the Big East had two, the Patriot League and SEC had one each. There were 21 schools with 4-year graduation rates of less than 20%. Two, Chicago State and Texas Southern, were under 10%. In general, the five-year graduation rates were better for this group but only three had rates over 40%.

338 D1 Women’s Soccer Schools

The following list is based on information from the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Given the two-year lag in the OPE data, COVID, conference realignments, and schools changing divisions, some of the data is likely to be inaccurate.
